Suggestions for improvements, mistakes, hints here please.

after you sand the edge of the case layers( i used some 400 grit wet dry) take a drop of wd-40 to your finger and oil the area you sanded then wipe it off with a paper towel, it makes the edge really polished looking and returns the sanded area to the color of the rest of the material.

Something that might make our sanding easier.
Get some more M4 bolts and nuts (or use the original bolts and add standard nuts.
Sandwich the thick rings together in one group. Put the PCB spacer in the middle.
This makes it a lot stronger and you can sand all of the layers at once.
Repeat with the thin rings.
You should be able to add the half rings in the appropriate sandwich.
I polished afterward with Brasso. Any areas that don't look dark enough I used olive oil in place of the afore-mentioned WD40.

That is cheating it will certainly help with the PCB ring, which is very fragile due to being very thin and having extra holes which are used whilst it's being routed (the bolt holes are cut through and can't be used to hold it).
I've used linseed oil but vegetable oil should work just as well.
You could also try polishing with an auto paint restorer such as T-cut, it'll give a nice gloss bakelite finish on the flat surfaces such as the laminate lid and base.
